DEAN OF THE COLLEGE OF PHARMACY

The University of Sharjah (UoS) in the United Arab Emirates seeks applications from qualified individuals for the position of Dean of the College of Pharmacy to begin in the academic year 2025/2026.

COLLEGE OF PHARMACY

Established in 2004, the College of Pharmacy offers a rigorous five-year Bachelor of Pharmacy (B. Pharm) program, admitting approximately 120 students annually from diverse backgrounds. The college adopts an integrated, problem-based educational philosophy, blending traditional and contemporary teaching methods with a strong emphasis on developing graduates' core competencies. The curriculum introduces students to pharmacy practice and clinical pharmacy early in their studies, promoting a holistic approach to patient care. It also features up-to-date courses in pharmaceutics, pharmacology, and medicinal chemistry at both junior and senior levels. The college is distinguished by its excellent research facilities and vibrant research programs. In addition, a Master of Science program in various pharmacy-related disciplines was launched last academic year, enrolling 24 graduate students.

The College of Pharmacy is dedicated to educating both professional and graduate students who are fully prepared to meet the public's need for safe and effective pharmaceutical care upon graduation. The college's commitment to high-quality instruction, innovative basic and applied research, and active community and professional service, combined with comprehensive training across all pharmacy practice settings, ensures that its academic programs are both rewarding and enriching. Recognized among the leading pharmacy programs in the region, the college graduated its first class of pharmacy students in 2009.

SCOPE OF WORK

The Dean of the College of Pharmacy reports directly to the Vice Chancellor for Medical and Health Sciences Colleges. The Dean directs, administers, and coordinates all research, educational, training, and clinical service activities in the college. He/she develops strategic directions for the college in cooperation with the faculty, creates and advances the initiatives of the college, and integrates the college's activities into the socio-cultural framework of the country to serve the healthcare needs of the UAE and the region.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Dean of the College of Pharmacy shall:

  • Create and sustain a strong network outside the college with the aim of facilitating the education and training and research activities.
  • Establish strategic directives, aims and policies related to the educational process and research activities within the college, and all its departments and oversee the implementation of such.
  • Represent the University in all matters related to the college at various conferences and symposia held outside the University.
  • Propose recommendations related to developing the annual budget for the college and implement and oversee these as well as conduct analysis of productivity and effectiveness on a regular basis.
  • Create a network of experts and visiting professors to support the educational and research activities of the college and its sustainability.
  • Propose recommendations related to developing University policies and procedures and participate in this process.
  • Coordinate agreements with ministries and relevant bodies within the UAE and abroad.
  • Possess knowledge of human resources and management concepts as well as higher education practices, policies, and procedures.
  • Propose research projects relevant to the region and its development.
  • Possess excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a multi-cultural and diverse community.
  • Possess experience in communicating and networking with relevant institutions with the aim of promoting education and research.
  • Be an expert in matters related to extenal institutions and organizations as well as international accreditation bodies.

 
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

The ideal candidate for this position will hold a terminal degree in pharmacy and possess an academic record that qualifies them for appointment at the rank of full professor. Candidates should demonstrate substantial experience in both professional and academic roles, as well as a distinguished record of teaching and academic achievements at the international level. The successful applicant must provide evidence of ongoing, impactful contributions to their field, including a strong portfolio of published research in reputable international scientific journals and active participation in exhibitions, conferences, and symposia. In addition, the candidate should possess the following degrees, qualifications, and professional experience:

  • A PhD from a recognized university
  • The rank of professor in one of the college's specializations
  • A record of excellence in teaching and research, appropriate to the rank of professor in one of the college's specializations
  • Preferred bi-lingual proficiency in English and Arabic (written and spoken)
  • Leadership qualities and proven research background in one of the college's specializations
  • A clear vision for developing higher education, in general, and for the college in particular
  • Full familiarity with the credit hour and academic year (semester) system
  • Distinguished managerial experience in higher education, preferably at the level of a college dean in a reputable university
  • Experience with the standards of program accreditation by specialized commissions at national education institutions
  • Acumen in human resources and administrative and financial concepts, practices, policies, and procedures.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with large sectors of a diverse community
  • Experience in communicating with universities, professional and academic institutions, associations, unions, companies and business administration institutions and other institutions within the field of education and research​

  • Managerial experience and the skills necessary to launch pioneering projects
  • Multi-cultural skills
  • Active participation in reputable organizations
  • Knowledge of the methods of evaluation and related matters
  • Proven documentation of supporting the achievements of faculty and students
  • Understanding of the latest teaching methods, including the use of technology in the teaching
  • Demonstration of an interest in the humanities and a commitment to enriching the educational experience of students
