Position Overview

The Department of Medicinal Chemistry located within the School of Pharmacy at the University of Kansas seeks exceptional candidates for a tenure track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level to commence by August 2019.

The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate excellence in research, teaching and service and will contribute to the Department’s expertise by having a background in medicinal chemistry, chemical biology or a closely related field. The candidate should have a strong record of basic research interfacing chemistry and biology and a commitment to graduate and undergraduate education in the field. The department is especially interested in candidates that have a developed research plan for externally sponsored research in a field that complements current research activities at the University (http://www.medchem.ku.edu).

It is located in Lawrence, a thriving and progressive community 35 miles west of Kansas City. The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the U.S. prior to the start of the position.

Job Description

40% – Initiate, organize, direct and maintain a vigorous program of research in medicinal chemistry or chemical biology (broadly defined) leading to external grant support and research publications in leading peer reviewed journals.

​40% – Teach and mentor graduate and professional students in the School of Pharmacy.

​20% – Participate collegially in the regular academic and service activities of the Department of Medicinal Chemistry and the School of Pharmacy.

Collegiality – All faculty members are expected to act in a manner that promotes collegial relationships and shows respect toward students, staff, and colleagues. Faculty members are expected to meet satisfactory standards of performance in all three areas of responsibility and to carry out those responsibilities in accordance with the Faculty Code of Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct.

Required Qualifications

Ph.D. in medicinal chemistry, chemical biology or a closely related field. Closely related research-based degrees such as D.Sc. are also acceptable.
Demonstrated potential for high quality, basic research at the interface of chemistry and biology as evidenced by publications and application materials.
Demonstrated potential for effective teaching at the graduate, undergraduate and/or professional levels as evidenced by application materials.
Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, administrators, students and other research personnel as demonstrated by application materials and interview.
