As chief academic and administrative officer of the School of Pharmacy, the dean is responsible for providing effective and transformational leadership to ensure the school’s long-term success.
- Providing visionary leadership in encouraging and rewarding faculty excellence in research, teaching, and engagement;
- Fostering academic excellence in established as well as emerging programs focused on KU’s strategic initiatives;
- Creating and maintaining a learning community in which students acquire knowledge and skills necessary for success in professional life and a multicultural world;
- Exploring innovative approaches to enhance the educational experience of students;
- Enhancing the visibility, status, and reputation of the School of Pharmacy locally, nationally, and internationally, while assuring sustained funding for groundbreaking research;
- Maintaining accreditation by ensuring all requirements are being met or exceeded by each department and program within the school;
- Maintaining a close, collaborative and beneficial relationship with pharmacy professionals, organizations, industry and the Kansas Board of Pharmacy;
- Providing leadership and collaborating with others to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion for all within the school;
- Energizing alumni, the KU community, foundations, KU Endowment, and others to continue providing support that builds upon the excellence of the school;
- Facilitating the recruitment, development, and retention of an outstanding and diverse faculty and student body in which women and minorities are well represented;
- Formulating and efficiently managing the budget of the school to allocate its resources in accordance with the best interests of the school and the university;
- Building synergistic relationships with KU academic units and research centers that enhance the excellence of education and research within the school and the larger university community;
- Recruiting, organizing, and directing a talented and effective staff that can assist the Dean in the accomplishment of these responsibilities.
In view of this broad array of responsibilities, the Dean must be a proven and visionary leader who has the organizational and administrative skills necessary to manage a sophisticated academic organization, as well as the interpersonal and management skills to engage successfully with a wide range of constituencies, with the goal of inspiring excellence in the KU School of Pharmacy.
1. Doctoral level or other terminal professional degree, such as Ph.D., Pharm.D., M.D., or other in a related field with a strong understanding of research, basic sciences, contemporary pharmacy practice, and health care systems.
2. Research, teaching, and service accomplishments warranting appointment as a tenured full professor.
3. Prior administrative experience and a demonstrated capacity for leadership.
1. A record demonstrating collaborative and visionary leadership, including effective change management.
2. Exceptional skill in securing, budgeting, and allocating resources to provide quality undergraduate and graduate education and research.
3. Knowledge of national and international trends in teaching and research leading to a vision of opportunity and a well-articulated plan for how such opportunity will be harnessed to increase our reputation, attract and retain domestic and international students, prepare all students for academic success and jobs, and continue to improve our research excellence.
4. Success in establishing a shared vision of teaching and research that is consistent with institutional goals and broader objectives outlined by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) and Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE).
5. Success in strategic use of resources to accomplish institutional goals and objectives.
6. Exceptional communication and team-building skills to facilitate effective and collegial relationships within the school and university, and to promote public awareness of the mission and accomplishments of the school.
7. Success in developing methods to recognize and support excellence in teaching and research, to foster a climate in which excellence in faculty research and quality teaching are expected, encouraged, and rewarded.
8. Experience in organization and direction of an effective administrative staff.
9. A commitment to the value of diversity as demonstrated by a record of building successful programs to recruit, develop, and retain an outstanding and diverse faculty, staff, and student body.
10. Success in developing methods to recognize and support excellence in service, to foster a climate in which engagement of faculty in professional societies, editorial boards, and similar activities of national leadership are expected, encouraged, and rewarded.
11. A commitment to the development and support of interdisciplinary and international research activities and programs.
12. Experience and achievements on external relations (e.g. alumni/industry and fundraising) and internal relations (e.g. faculty hiring and development; students and curriculum).
13. Personal scholarly reputation and stature (i.e. publications, citations, awards/honors/recognition).
14. Successful leadership in program accreditation and accreditation activities.
