Position Overview

The Department of Medicinal Chemistry at The University of Kansas (Lawrence) invites applications and nominations for the position of Associate Professor/Chair or Full Professor/Chair. The successful candidate should have established research interest in medicinal chemistry and/or chemical biology as broadly defined and demonstrated administrative and leadership capabilities for chairing the department in 5-year terms.

The Department of Medicinal Chemistry is one of four departments (with the other being Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacology and Toxicology, and Pharmacy Practice) in the School of Pharmacy of The University of Kansas.

In addition to its involvement in the professional pharmacy program (Pharm.D.) within the School of Pharmacy, the Department of Medicinal Chemistry, which has currently 8 full-time faculty members, maintains active programs in research (approx. $2 million per year of external support) and graduate training (15-20 predoctoral students on an average, about 10-15 postdoctoral associates) and numerous undergraduate researchers, and an outstanding technical staff. The general research areas emphasized in the Department include: medicinal chemistry, chemical biology, biochemistry, molecular cell biology (with emphasis on anti-infectives and anti-cancer molecules; protein structure and function; organic synthesis; neurochemistry; peptide and peptide-mimics; combinatorial chemistry; glyco-immunity and glycobiology).

Job Description

Teaching
Active participation in teaching professional pharmacy students in the PharmD program and graduate students in the Department of Medicinal Chemistry
Work with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs to ensure outcomes related to the Medicinal Chemistry Department in the PharmD program are effectively taught
Include assessment of general education outcomes in core courses taught within the department

Research
Development of and continual maintenance of a vigorous, well-funded research program in medicinal chemistry, which provides opportunity for training graduate, post-doctoral, and qualified undergraduate students.
Development and enhancement of research, and educational relationships between the Department and other units on the Lawrence and the Medical Center Campus’ as well as appropriate public, private, or government institutions and agencies.
Support ongoing efforts to increase externally funded research to strengthen MDCM degree programs and improve infrastructure.
Advance the department and school’s role in the Bioscience and Technology Business Center (BTBC) on the Lawrence Campus and the Institute for Advancing Medical Innovation (IAMI) on the KUMC Campus.

Service/Leadership
Provide leadership, both short-term and long-term, and create, together with the faculty, a stimulating intellectual and physical environment for teaching, research, and professional growth.
Oversee departmental strategic planning, including the areas of teaching, research, and service.
Align departmental efforts with the Strategic Plans of the School and University.
Provide proactive leadership that promotes teamwork and effective organizational strategies.
Work effectively within a structure of shared governance.
Ensure the departmental administrative functions related to personnel, space, and budgetary matters are fulfilled in a timely manner, in a way that provides for input from the faculty
Supervision and in-person annual evaluation of faculty in the areas of teaching, research, and service.
Supervision and annual evaluation of support staff.
Appointment and annual evaluation of adjunct faculty.
Adjudication of personnel matters and service as the administrative. representative for grievance procedures for the Department.
Manage course instructor assignments.
Provide leadership and oversight in all Departmental activities, including faculty recruitment, retention, and development.
Oversee curriculum development and revisions for the department.
Initiate new academic programs and projects when appropriate.
Review and revise departmental information published in the university catalog.
Manage the maintenance of departmental print and electronic records, including websites.
Prepare and submit the annual Departmental budget and manage all departmental funds in accordance with School and University budgetary guidance.
Effectively execute University policies at the departmental level.
Ensure compliance with all applicable University, State and Federal safety regulations.
Act as a representative and advocate for the department, both within the University and externally.
Actively engage in annual fundraising activities to support graduate program and other Departmental needs.
Support, encourage and communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty and staff.
Provide leadership to foster a culture of safety, promote safety through actions, communication and training and integrate safety practice into daily activities.
Other duties as assigned by the Dean of Pharmacy.

Required Qualifications

Ph.D. and research training in medicinal chemistry, chemical biology or a closely related field. Closely related research-based degrees such as D.Sc. are also acceptable.
Rank of Associate Professor or higher with tenure.
A documented record of excellence in the areas of teaching in higher education, research, and service.
An internationally recognized reputation and outstanding record of accomplishments in medicinal chemistry or closely related discipline.
Research expertise in Alzheimer’s Disease or a closely related neuroscience area.
A vigorous ongoing program of research activity in medicinal chemistry or a closely related field.
Demonstrated administrative and leadership capabilities.
Excellent problem-solving skills, communication, and interpersonal skills that are indicative of an ability to develop a collegial environment of collaboration in teaching and research.
Experience engaging with prospective students, alumni, and corporate representatives.
Success in administration of programs in higher education to include strategic planning, budgeting, operations and collaboration with colleagues.

Preferred Qualifications

A distinguished record of accomplishment commensurate with nomination for an important named Distinguished Professorship within the University.
Experience in teaching both undergraduate and graduate students and a continuing commitment to excellence in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate level.
Proven ability to conduct collaborative interdisciplinary research involving both chemical and biological components.
