PHARMACOLOGY PROFESSOR

The University of Medicine and Health Sciences-St. Kitts (UMHS) invites applications for a faculty position in Pharmacology and Therapeutics.
UMHS offers a traditional four-year Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. The University operates year-round and offers three semesters per calendar year which start in January, May, and September. Students complete the Basic Science Program at the UMHS state of the art campus in St. Kitts. The fifth semester occurs at the UMHS campus in Portland, Maine. Students complete their third year of core clinical rotations and the fourth year of elective rotations in one of our many affiliates accredited teaching hospitals throughout the United States and Canada. To graduate, students must successfully complete the UMHS medical program and pass the USMLE Steps 1 and Step 2. UMHS graduates are eligible to apply for a US residency and subsequently may practice medicine in the United States and Canada.
The successful candidate will be part of the team teaching the Pharmacology course which is taught in the second year. Because UMHS courses are team taught, faculty members have time to engage in research and other scholarly activity. The UMHS academic year has three semesters; therefore, teaching responsibilities occur throughout the year.Responsibilities include:
Developing and providing students with approved syllabi and learning objectives. Organizing, preparing, and regularly updating course content. Delivering effective lectures utilizing a variety of teaching techniques and state of the art teaching technologies. Preparing and administering quizzes and examinations. Focusing on student success by being available to students during non-teaching time. Serving on faculty committees. Supervising students in a variety of activities, including but not limited to, problem based learning activities as well as activities in local clinical settings. Developing the Pharmacology course in line with the requirements for success in USMLE examinations. Maintaining office hours and provide academic counseling and advisement. Participating in activities assigned by the Department Chair and/or University Administration.
Minimum Qualifications:
Passion for teaching. Doctoral degree: Earned Ph.D. or MBBS/MD in Pharmacology and Therapeutics. Three to five years’ experience teaching in a recognized and accredited medical school preferably in the US, Canada, Puerto Rico, or the UK. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially PowerPoint. Outstanding written and verbal communication skills in English.
Course Description: MPHM 0910 Pharmacology & Therapeutics 7 credits. This course concentrates on how chemical agents (drugs) regulate or modify physiological functions of the body, demonstrating how interactions of drugs with living organisms contribute to diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of cure of diseases. Biologic responses, physiological alterations and correction of disorder or disease are discussed for each drug class highlighting receptor interaction which defines the agent’s boundaries of efficacy. Because pharmacology and the therapeutics is an integrated science, strong attempt is made to maintain this integrated approach in lectures, tutorials and case studies. Major emphasis will be on principles of pharmacogenetics (pharacodynamics, phamacokinetics, adverse drug reactions, feratogenicity, etc.) as well as therapeutics of common drugs used in infectious diseases, malignant diseases, and endocrine disorders.
Salary and Benefits : The position is full time and the salary is commensurate with teaching experience and degree. The faculty member is provided with an excellent health care plan which covers both US and St. Kitts health care. Since there are three fifteen week semesters the faculty member has seven weeks’ vacation a year which comes as the last two weeks in May, August, and three weeks in December. Faculty are also provided an annual one week leave with expenses to attend a pre-approved professional convention.
